Vector Files

Vector refers to a type of spatial data used by a GIS that consists of dimension less points, lines, or polygons. Their significance depends upon the context in which they are used or displayed. Vector files can be attached to a landscape as optional themes to depict roads or streams that overlay the visible theme providing reference and familiarity with the landscape. Or they can be used to import a barrier or ignition pattern.

Vector files can be of the following formats:

For ARC ASCII files, you will be prompted for information the confirms the input file as containing points, lines, or polygons. ASCII vector vertices from GIS vector files must NOT be in scientific notation (recommend exporting vectors as single precision).

Remember that ArcView Shape Files are really three seperate files. Besides the .SHP file, there are .SHX and .DBF files with the same file name. This is important only when moving Shape Files or when you get into a mood to clean up your hard drive.

Attaching selected vector files to the project will allow them to be restored when you reset the simulation or clear the window if this is checked. Up to 5 vector files to be saved to a FARSITE Project (.FPJ) File for display on the landscape. Projects saved with these vectors will redraw the vectors automatically when the project is loaded and landscape displayed. You can review all of the attached vector files with the Attached Vector File button in the "FARSITE Project" dialog box.
